Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
