Educating an Infant to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The company behind the advertisement claims that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is in fact "purposeful investment in early instruction".

"A household located in the northern part of London wants to find an exceptional and experienced instructor to support their most junior child on his initial journey to becoming an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might naturally miss the wording "initial stages" as just an expression.

But, it might be the crucial part of this unique position posting, as it seeks to find a teacher for a infant.

Many of submissions have since been received since the anonymous family posted their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the listing has attracted interest throughout the news, with many questioning why?

Innovative Idea

A tutoring expert, chief executive of a global tutoring firm, which is supporting the family in their search, stated that despite initial doubt, he viewed the plan "forward-looking", and "innovative".

When he spoke with the family, he said they understood the unconventional aspect of their demand, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they stated that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their older child was five, and by that stage "cultural influence had by then become established".

But what did the family mean by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "all-encompassing", he responded. "The manner you eat, the manner you speak".

He stated the elder child had picked up "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family informed him they hoped to prevent history to repeat itself with their younger child.

The intention: To engage a UK tutor, who needs to speak with standard English accent, to shape the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency claim the post has started a larger discussion about how families view schooling, privilege and the role of cultural environment in education.

Subtle Influence

"Much of the learning at the start here is somewhat acquired indirectly," stated the CEO.

It's through this subtle influence that the family are expecting the child will adopt the UK customs they wish to cultivate.

He explained the tutor must be an individual who attended "the appropriate educational institutions – comparable categories of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, effortlessly," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family told him the successful candidate should preferably also have understanding of or interest in horse riding, winter sports, artistic pursuits and instrumental training so as to inspire the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.

More than that though, he said the family hoped the tutor to enrol the child on a range of lessons so the child would be "horseback riding and picking up an tool by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's view, guiding their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will result in accomplishment and create opportunities.

"Considering the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he comments.

But, in spite of all this guidance in "Britishness", might the child adopt alleged cultural influence from the globally influenced family he is raised by regardless?

"Absolutely", replied the CEO. "The family know this may not work, but they've merely embraced the attitude of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as quickly as we can', because the cost of it is irrelevant," he explained.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

A number of in the private teaching field who have those concerns.

An education leader, head and founder of Blue Education, who also offer individual instructors, stated that "the journey of embracing two identities, or actually, discovering oneself, is something that must be lived into, not designed."

Peter noted that he had emigrated from the Far East to the United Kingdom at the time of 7 years old, and had been educated understanding and practicing two backgrounds. He progressed to be educated at a prestigious UK institution.

"The idea that a single person can function as a embodiment of Britishness, an individual who can possibly transplant the characteristics of a British gentleman upon a 12-month-old child, seems to me idealistic and impractical," he stated.

"In my experience, engaging a distinctly British tutor from infancy will does not automatically achieve the goal they desire.

"I did not have that kind of mentor, and yet I have been privileged enough to live numerous of the opportunities they hope for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, self-identity can not be dictated from the outside; it must be chosen, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam hopes can be instructed – and sold.

"I think the reality that the global community views us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
